Message from the President,

Take a heap of child-like wonder
That opens up our eyes
To the unexpected gifts in life—
Each day a sweet surprise.
Mix in fond appreciation
For the people whom we know;
Like festive candles,
Each one has a special glow.
Add some giggles and some laughter,
A dash of Holiday food,
(Amazing how a piece of pie
Improves our attitude!)
Stir it all with human kindness;
Wrap it up in love and peace,
Decorate with optimism, and
Our joy will never cease.
If we use this healthy recipe,
We know we will remember
To be in the Holiday spirit,
Even when it's not December.

Millstream Miniature Llamas
Owned & Operated by Lavinia and Alan Stevens

When did you first become interested in llamas?
We first became interested in llamas in 1993 after visiting an agriculture fair. We bought our first llama who lived with a few goats on our property. We eventually sold the goats and concentrated on llamas.

And then, when did you learn about & purchase your first miniature llamas?
I first read about miniature llamas in the Camelid Quarterly in 2007. There was an article written by Julie Sines on mini llamas which caught my attention. They sounded fascinating and so we started to do some research. We took a buying trip to Kentucky, Iowa and Minnesota and put together our herd of mini llamas, which we then imported into Canada.

How would you compare miniatures with other types of llamas?
Mini llamas have all the good attributes of regular llamas but because of their size they are less intimidating. They eat less, require less housing and pasture and of course are very cute.

How many llamas do you currently own?
We have 21 mini llamas, 3 Cria llamas (2 of which are boarded here), and one alpaca.

What things would you like to see happen in the future of miniatures to promote the breed?
AMLA should continue their good work to promote a sustainable industry.

Do you consider yourself a breeder?
YesMillstream Minis

Do you enjoy showing your llamas?
We do enjoy showing but unfortunately there are hardly any llama shows on the west coast.

I’ve heard you are a fiber artist.
Do you shear & process your own product?
I do all of my own shearing and send it off to the Gulf Island Spinning Mill to be processed.

What things do you do with the fiber/yarn/batts?
I have a variety of things done with my fibre. Most of it comes back as yarn. The rest is roving, felt and socks. The roving I have been dyeing and doing some needle felting. The felt I have made into insoles. All of these I take to our local market once a week to sell including bags of llama manure. So far we have done very well and it is great exposure for our farm and for miniature llamas.

What would you say to a prospective llama owner about miniature llamas?
We encourage all of our prospective buyers to visit as many llama farms as possible before buying so that they are comfortable with their llamas. I would say “Go for it”. It is a wonderful lifestyle!
